AAP Foundation Fellowship to the Institute for Teaching & Learning in the Health Professions

Fellowships are available to cover full tuition to the Institute's Program for Dental School Faculty.

WHAT IS AWARDED?

AAP Foundation Fellowships are available to the Academy for Academic Leadership (AAL) Institute for Teaching and Learning in the Health Professions. Each $3,500 Fellowship will cover the full tuition for the Institute's Program for Dental School Faculty.

WHO SHOULD APPLY

The program, developed by the Academy for Academic Leadership, will be helpful to periodontists in private practice who have an interest in teaching either full- or part-time.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM FOR DENTAL SCHOOL FACULTY

Through the program, the new faculty member may expect to gain competencies in teaching and other academic skills in the context of career planning. For the private practice periodontist wishing to transition to a faculty position, the program provides the opportunity to learn about teaching and best practices, the academic environment, and career opportunities. Periodontal post-doctoral faculty will develop a personal professional strategy for a rewarding life-long career as a dental educator.

The program provides 4 days of training in one phase at dental schools with opportunities for expanded virtual experiences. This real-life context for learning provides for large and small group sessions, interactive exercises, case-based and problem-based learning, peer observation of teaching, and reflective journals as well as mentored rotations with dental school faculty.

HOW DO CANDIDATES APPLY?

The application deadline is April 30. Applicants should indicate their interest in the AAP Foundation Fellowship in their letter of application. Application is made directly to the Academy for Academic Leadership.

HOW ARE FELLOWSHIPS AWARDED?

The Academy for Academic Leadership will receive the applications. The AAP Foundation Selection Committee will select up to five awardees annually. Additional information may be found at the website of the Academy for Academic Leadership. Interested periodontists also may phone 404-350-2098.

Inspiring Stories
Gustavo Avila Ortiz

Gustavo-Avila-Ortiz

“I feel better and better each day that I teach. I consider myself a privileged individual for having a job that I love in a wonderful institution. At the same time, having the ability to positively influence the careers and lives of the students with whom I interact makes it feel even better. My own personal experiences as a student helped me understand the importance of mentorship, therefore, I try my best to inspire and support pre- and post-doctoral students alike. I think my progression over the past two years has been tremendous in part because of the peace of mind afforded by the AAP Foundation Teaching Fellowship I was awarded in 2011; I can focus on being the best teacher and researcher I can be without worrying about finances,” says Gustavo Avila-Ortiz, DDS, MS, PhD.
