Jennifer L. Bain, DMD, 2011 Educator Scholar:

1. What is your research focus?

My research focuses on developing new techniques to enhance the regenerative potential of commercial bone grafts. We utilize targeted, directed delivery of osteoinductive factors that are anchored to bone graft materials. In animal studies we show results better to or comparable to growth factors currently on the market with less side effects and less cost.

2. What has/have been the most significant contribution(s) of your research to our specialty?

This research is an early demonstration of next generation grafting material utilizing synthetic polypeptides to increase the osteoinductive ability of commercial bone graft. This is early stage research that would impact the clinical applicability of bone grafting products opening the door to many more patients.

3. What are some future directions of your research program?

We must first go through dosing studies and then move towards Phase I clinical trials. We also are investigating utilizing the technology on implant surfaces, membranes, as well as bone graft materials.

4. What influence did the support from the Foundation have on your career as a researcher?

The support from the foundation had a profound impact on me. The funds allowed me to pay down debt which gave me the freedom to continue to pursue research and finish my PhD.
