Satish Kumar, DDS, MDSc, 2014 Foundation Fellow to the ADEA/AAL Institute for Teaching & Learning in the Health Professions, 2013 Educator Scholar:

1. What is your research focus?

Currently, I am pursuing a project to understand the quality of clinical research reporting in periodontology.

2. What has/have been the most significant contribution(s) of your research to our specialty?

I hope this project will contribute in some small degree towards the improvement of quality of clinical research conduct and reporting in periodontology.

3. What are some future directions of your research program?

With the current projects that my colleagues and I are pursuing, I hope to advance this to deriving simple solutions to filter the already published high quality clinical research and apply to clinical care, and also to improve the conduct and reporting of future clinical research studies, while simultaneously collecting data to identify some of the challenges and opportunities.

4. What influence did the support from the Foundation have on your career as a researcher?

The American Academy of Periodontolgy Foundation's support bolstered my aspiration to return to full-time academia after I complete my training in Periodontology. This will allow me to pursue scholarship at all levels - teaching, learning, discovery, integration and application. This pursuit is a life-long process and I hope to contribute to my overarching goal of helping others around me through my profession – mainly patients, students, residents, and fellow colleagues, while I continue to be a life-long learner learning from the same people that I am able to help.
