Jill Bashutski, DDS, MS, 2005 Tarrson Regeneration Scholar, 2008 Foundation Fellow to the ADEA/AAL Institute for Teaching & Learning in the Health Professions, 2008 Lazzara Fellow, 2010 Nevins Fellow:

1. What is your research focus?

Primarily, I am researching the ability of systemic agents to enhance outcomes of periodontal and implant therapy. Most recently, I have been studying vitamin D and teriparatide.

2. What has/have been the most significant contribution(s) of your research to our specialty?

As part of a team of researchers at the University of Michigan, our group was one of the first to publish human clinical trials on the use of teriparatide to regenerate bone lost due to periodontal disease, and to provide evidence that adequate vitamin D levels are necessary for successful periodontal surgery outcomes.

3. What are some future directions of your research program?

I am currently working on new technologies to improve surgical accuracy using surgical-guide alternatives.

4. What influence did the support from the Foundation have on your career as a researcher?

The foundation provided critical financial, educational, and mentorship support at every step in my career as a periodontist. Without the Foundation, I would not be where I am today.
